FEMA moving aggressively to get people out of travel trailers

Deadline is June 1, before worst of heat brings out more formaldehyde

FEMA trailers are fast disappearing from the Texas landscape in the wake of the CDC’s announcement that travel trailers provided to hurricane victims have tested, on average, five times higher for formaldehyde fumes than is common for indoor air.

Formaldehyde is used in most man-made building materials from cabinets to carpeting, and in objects such as furniture and draperies. It’s in products like the permanent press in clothes, but in the larger air space of a home, formaldehyde fumes are not as concentrated as in a travel trailer.

There is no established level for residential indoor air quality regarding formaldehyde, but at the levels found by the Centers for Disease Control, fumes can cause respiratory problems and are listed as a possible carcinogen. Last summer, concerns were raised over the long-term effects of exposure on children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with breathing problems.
